To imply that the 160 is a mere copy of a b-1 is naive at best, as the aircraft is much more massive,faster and has a far greater unrefueled range. It is the heaviest and fastest bomber in the world and employs the most powerful engines of ANY combat aircraft in the world. The 160 is back in production. Any aviation expert can readily verify these statements as well as the fact that the blackjack and lancer are in fact quite unique from one another.

i prefer this plane than the B2 i mean modern sistems can detect and shot down stealth planes(s400) even old russian sistems with a experienced operator can shot down remember F117 on serbia, the B2 is a flying rock, the TU160 flyes like a hawk if im going to be detected on both aircrafts i prefer the fast one

I happen to be a U.S. citizen who can openly admit that Russian aviation has been and still is right up there with the best. So many awesome aircraft! My personal opinion is that the Tu-160 is a remarkable feat of engineering and a truely awesome aircraft. Not just in capability, but esthetically, earning its nickname of "White Swan." She's a gorgeous machine. By the way, all Tu-160s are now in the process of being upgraded to the newest avionics.

I'd rather be in the B-1. The TU-160 is more like the cancelled B-1A, built for speed at altitude. The B-1B is optimized for low level penetration and evasion.

One of the main advantages is that Tu 160 launch cruise missiles with nuclear warheads miles away from the target,wich make them more eficent than flying above the target and then drop the bomb.

Right now 16 are operational with the Russian air force. Their numbers will grow however as more are in production and completion mode. All existing 160s are in the process of being upgraded and modernized.

They planned 100. Made around 35. Slightly less in service now. Somewhat slow serial production is back up, though. There'll be more. There is a modernization program to get better HUD and a glass cockpit. Even in small numbers, these things are the single most powerful aerial weapons system in the world.

Actually, the TU-160 has highly advanced terrain following radar for low flight at about mach1, or slightly less. As such, the Tu-160 is like B1A and B1B in one package, but with more weapons.

Yes, original plans were for 100 aircraft. 35 is the total number of 160s built thus far. Of that 3 were prototypes. There is one Tu-160 in a museum in Ukraine. 10 were destroyed by Ukraine. 1 crashed in 2003. Right now there are 16 in ACTIVE service, one recently completed late in December will very soon be the 17th. Russia plans to have 30 active Tu-160s when production is completed.

2)Full support of cruising and steering through GLONASS global satellite positioning system.
3)Updated version of NK-32 engines with increased reliability.
4)Ability to operate new nuclear/non-nuclear GLONASS-navigated cruise missiles (Kh-555).
