Pre-flop: MM raises to 60k, Ivey calls, Lester calls, there's dead money of 40k(blind+ante) Pot is 220k
Flop: MM raises 70k, Ivey calls, Lester folds. Pot is now 360k.
Turn: MM raises 200k(less than 2/3 of the pot) Pot is now 560k. If Ivey called, it would've been 760k. Since Ivey went all-in, pot became 880k and it was 120k for MM to call. 880k to 120k = 7:1 to call. If anyone says they would fold under this circumstance, then you obviously have not played tournaments in your life.
Only way Moneymaker could stacked Ivey if he doesnt hit 9 on the turn was by ceking which he didnt. So Ivey would have folded. So yes it was pure luck.
*epic fail*
But guess what? Moneymaker wins the hand, goes on to win Main Event on TV, poker explodes all over the world, leading Ivey to amass over $100 million in his bank account.
This bad beat was the luckiest thing to ever happen to Phil Ivey.
