The rocket has a penetrating warhead if I'm not mistaken - just before impact, a plasma ejection occurs, defeating reactive armor and burning a hole into the tank. This allows the warhead to explode inside.
What's more potent? a 500 pound explosion in the open air, or a 100 pound explosion in a confined space? :) You think about it and then answer :)

the javelin missile is pacifically used to destroy tanks i use them in the welsh guards armoured division! it penetrates the tank an within a millisecond it explodes believe me there were no explosives in that tank!
