Doyle Dykes -- "Chet Stuff"

Video Description:  This is some "Chet Stuff" Doyle picked out at a little concert in Gilroy this year. I reserved tickets four months in advance, but the front row was reserved for people who went to the church, I think... So that's why you'll see some of the shot blocked by peoples' heads. :D
He starts out with "Oh By Jingo, Oh By Gee", throws a few tunes in the middle and ends with "12th Street Rag" and even the Woody Woodpecker theme! The only part of this I've taken the time to figure out is the lick at the very end, which I though was an illsuion of sorts -- even after I had figured it out -- unil I began to practice the run myself. Shoot me an e-mail for tablature of that bit (Jer1400@gmail.com).
I'm a really big Doyle expert, but not a big Chet follower, so if any friend of Chester's could tell me the names of those mystery songs that sure would be a good help.
Much thanks to my friend, Loc (tienloc47), who was sittin' next to me and shot the video. :)
God bless, guys. Amen.

Of course, great playing. Whoever records these with cam-digi type mics, its going to sound thinny, and not true to the instrument.

I love Doyle's playing and think he is so talented but his tone is not that good. His Taylor sounds like an Ovation. Way to tiny.

Hey man!! I have three vids posted now. Bear with some of the mistakes. That's what happens when you take a break and sell all three of your guitars. The one in the vids is a cheapy from a friend, but it works.

This is an almost dreadful quality recording of a true legend. Some guitarists meet the Devil @ the Crossroads. Doyle met Christ and was filled with the Holy Spirit which resulted in his learning how to finger tap which really impressed ol' Chet Atkins who asked him who taught him to play guitar "like that". Doyle told Chet "God knows how to play the guitar!".

Doyle is famous for his terrible tone. He tells pretty poor jokes, too. Please, stop with the Christian grade humor.

To put Doyle's playing in perspective - a writer asked Chet once who he would pay to see play. Chet said "I'd pay to see Doyle Dykes." That's as good as it gets.

doyle is in the top 1% of all guitarist...and I saw him in person here in Saratoga Springs, and maybe in the top 1% of all people...what nice gentleman...I watched as every person walked up to him after the show and he is just as nice and as patient as can be, and used the person's first name each time, to me that is a small but significant thing. this man has every reason to be an arrogant person ala eddie van halen and hog his "secrets", but he shares his love of music. he leaves you inspired

The best fingerstyle picker anywhere, even Chet said "Have you heard Doyle Dykes Lately?". Doyle, you are my hereo!, even though my Taylor guitar has turned out to be a dissapointment.
Interesting ... ( 4 months ago by theonlyrealMugsy)
Interesting sentiment.
I had a taylor for a while. Got rid of it and was happy I did. I've played about 100 of them. Can't get a single one that I like. The 4000 dollar ones are just as impersonal as the 400 dollar ones. I also quickly sampled Doyle vids here, and even after a dozen or so in 5 mins, not a single one of them had ANY bottom end, or rich tone. Tommy killed with the Maton in the same vid for tone. re:"The best": Scotty Anderson is a FORCE OF NATURE.

Taylor Guitars are generally too twangy for my tastes. For the same money as a middle of the road Taylor, you can have a Washburn or Alvarez that sounds much nicer.

seriously good tone.
I play some single notes on an impromptu end section for "Strawberry Fields" on here with a piano player. Tell me what you think of the tone.
