Well, in a way BogFrog is right. Art should be like the creator wants it to be and not about how an audience expects it to be.
It's a beautiful thought, but that doesn't mean it's realistic.

I don't really agree with you. Sure buying albums is better than downloading, but if everyone would download there still would be songs made. I bet the whole breakcorescene wouldn't last without downloading. And I produce tracks myself and I think I'll never charge any money for them. I don't want to start a fight with you or whatevr, just giving my opinion. Great song!

True, it's an interesting debate. I know a guy who's very anti-commercial (check out a tune YT; "Hallam Foe - Here on my own") The guy who uploaded it was at a point giving away the tune, dispite being 'in love' with it (it out there, they've heard it, they like it- maybe it's time now to reward the creator) Obviously the artist has the right to distribute their work how they see fit, but it's not really cool, to take some praise for redistributing when the artist is not involved struggling.

True, music like food sustains us. You can grow you own or make your own, if not the people who provide you with it need to receive some reward.

music can't be "explained" at all, but i imagine that it can be broken down and analyzed using mathematics, i mean every note, every sound has a certain pitch, which can be represented by a wavelength, which is a number, so, in scales and the like, i imagine there would be some kind of mathematical pattern that could be found

Very different medium, im not talking about a social scene. I produce music also and do give away my music, the only way i make money is through live performance and odd jobs. I would like to one day be able to produce music for a living, which is near impossible if you have to give it all away for free. Im not denying any good music would be made but people need to make a living, not just make music in spare time to impress the peers. Just giving my counter "opinion" btw.

If you would like to make your living out of it I can understand why you don't want to give it away. But then still: Radiohead had an action in which you could decide how much you would pay for it. And they still made quite some money, although you could get it free legally. The point is: once your famous enough people will be willing to pay ;). Wow... I totally lost what I was trying to say to you but well...

You get paid ... ( 6 days ago by Nitrocide)
You get paid royalties for your copyright being used. You have two choices of contract with the music company, either agree to a salary for a promise of a certain number of albums or agree to a contract by numbers of sales. If your good, and the label knows it, theyll offer you the prior, but if the sales dont back up with the album sales then they reserve the right to terminate the contract, thus REALLY screwing over the artist and possibly down to over filesharing.

The label usually owns the copyrights don't they? If a band switches labels, the records they made under the old label still get reproduced by the original label? The artist just gets a check by contract but they only own the lyrics or riffs (writing credits) or something?
