Misreading the ... ( 2 months ago by stinky472)
Misreading the opponent who has superior odds doesn't make it a bad beat, normally that is a bad play. But I can't say it's a bad play here, but the fact that he lost on the river doesn't make it a bad beat, just a tough one. Who in the world can avoid losing all of their money in this kind of situation when they hit quad aces on the river?

He didn't actually lose on the river. Phillips hit the straight on the turn which beat Mabuchis trip aces. Probably wasn't a bad beat cos Mabuchi probably slow played the trip aces on the flop giving Phillips a free card. Sucks to lose on that though.

A bad beat also means when a really good hand gets beat by an even better hand, which is clearly what it means here. I know this usage isn't as common, but check wikipedia for example.

I don't understand ... ( 2 weeks ago by Vollrath1114)
I don't understand how this is a bad beat... Mabuchi was only in the lead on the flop and tried to slow play his hand.. Phillips hit his straight on the flop and the river card gave him his royal flush.. So it wasn't a really a bad beat because Mabuchi never really had a the hand to begin with.. His A-J just sucked out Mabuchi's quads...
..... Thats poker =P

and pre flop.. A bad beat would be like..
Same hand except the all in call was made on the flop instead of the river.. even then it would give phillips a strong straight and flush draw anyways.. so if his cards were off suit and that final card wasnt an ace but gave phillips his straight, that would be a bad beat

I can not only play ... ( 1 week ago by stinky472)
I can not only play quite well, but I can spell too. :-) And BTW, this debate about a bad beat/tough beat has nothing to do with playing poker. In any case, I don't expect any intelligent poker theorists to be on here, so I'm wasting my time. That does make me an idiot a little bit to be trying to explain things to an idiot.
Bad beat/tough beat ... ( 1 week ago by stinky472)
Bad beat/tough beat depends on perspective. The aces dominated KJs pre-flop, but the bulk of the betting was post-flop. Typically a bad beat occurs when the opponent hits one of his few outs after a lot of aggressive betting. Post-flop, the straight/flush draw provided many outs so it wasn't such a bad beat. Being unlucky by having a great hand and then being beaten by an even better hand isn't always equivalent to a bad beat.
To sort of counter ... ( 1 week ago by stinky472)
To sort of counter my own argument, however, a lot of modern poker players tend to focus primarily pre-flop. That's because most of them aren't very good at playing post-flop, and would rather get most of their money in pre-flop if they had their tight/aggressive way. These players don't tend to see poker as a game of fluctuating odds, so they focus primarily on pre-flop odds, not understanding that even the best poker hand can have inferior odds post-flop.
So, to sum things ... ( 1 week ago by stinky472)
So, to sum things up, those who are saying it's a bad beat from a pre-flop perspective are correct in a way, but it's important to note that there wasn't so much aggressive betting pre-flop. Those who are saying it's a bad beat because the guy got so lucky getting quads while the other guy had a straight flush are wrong.
